Kitten Eye That Looks Odd

I have a 7 month old kitten, and I noticed that one of her eyes looks odd. It's not the same size as the other and isn't reflecting light like the other one does. I just noticed this and she isn't showing any other signs of, anything. She's eating and drinking, she's grooming herself. Both eyes are open all the way, and her energy levels haven't changed.

Vet Suggestion on Treating a Kitten Eye

Hello there,

There are a number of conditions that could be responsible for the unusual appearance of your cat’s eye, including chronic infections, developmental disorders, and nervous system dysfunction to name a few. This doesn’t sound like an emergency situation, so as long as things don’t take a turn for the worse, you should bring what’s going on to your veterinarian’s attention at your cat’s next regularly scheduled visit.

A thorough ophthalmic exam and a few simple tests (e.g.,a measurement of tear production, a stain to look for wounds and other abnormalities on the surface of the cornea, and a check of eye pressure) should lead to a diagnosis or at least give you an idea as to whether this is something that needs to be followed up on, perhaps with a visit to a veterinary ophthalmologist.

Best of luck,

Jennifer Coates, DVM
