Treatment for a Cat Cold with Stuffy Nose
Reader Question: How to Help a Sneezing Cat with No Nasal Drainage
Hello, my 10 year old over-weight cat has been sneezing frequently for the past couple of days, and when he breathes though his nose it sounds congested. I fear he likely picked up the kitty cold from one of the strays outside. However, I have seen no nasal drainage from him yet. I was wondering if there is anything I can do to help him get over this? Preferably some sort of natural supplement I can give him.
Sarah.
Suggestions from our Veterinarian on how to treat a cat coldHello Sarah,
Most “kitty colds” resolve on their own with symptomatic care. Encourage your cat to eat, drink, and rest (keep him indoors if at all possible). If his nose starts to drain and gets crusty, cleaning the area with a warm, wet cloth can ease his discomfort and encourage him to eat since cats won’t eat what they can’t smell.
Sometimes putting cats with “colds” in a steamy bathroom (run a hot shower with the door closed) for 10-15 minutes a few times a day can also be helpful. Some owners use homeopathic preparations and report success.
If your cat’s condition worsens or does not improve over the course of a week or two, make an appointment with your veterinarian.
Best of luck,
